Acupuncture

Acupuncture is a therapy that involves placing thin needles into designated points on the body to promote healing. This technique is known to improve blood circulation, reduce pain and inflammation, balance hormones, improve mood, promote relaxation and regulate the autonomic nervous system. Acupuncture is a natural and minimally invasive form of medical treatment that has been practiced for thousands of years.

Acupuncture needle insertion by acupuncturist

Frequently Asked Questions

Is acupuncture treatment painful?

Acupuncture needles are extremely thin. The diameter of most acupuncture needles ranges from 0.12mm to 0.3mm. Oftentimes patients won't even feel the needles as they are being inserted. Discomfort is minimal, and for most patients, only occurs at the moment of insertion. Once the needles are all in place, it is common to feel a dull ache or sometimes even a slight tingling sensation. This is normal and is often a good sign that the body is responding to the needles. It is very important to feel comfortable during your treatment and a good acupuncturist will check in to make sure everything feels okay.

How do I prepare for an acupuncture treatment?

When you arrive to your first acupuncture treatment, be prepared to answer questions. Your practitioner will take a full health history at your first appointment.

Make sure that you are hydrated and have had something to eat. It is not recommended to get acupuncture while fasting, so make sure to have a snack or a light meal before your appointment.

Wear loose, comfortable clothing. In some cases you may need to disrobe, but other times all you will need to do is roll up your sleeves or pant legs.

Does insurance cover acupuncture?

Yes! Many insurance plans cover acupuncture. Modern research has shown that acupuncture can be an effective treatment for many different health conditions. Acupuncture coverage varies from plan to plan. Some plans will only cover treatment for certain conditions. Most plans cover treatment for pain related conditions and nausea. Some plans will cover for menstrual disorders, insomnia, fatigue and mental health disorders as well.

Andrea has extensive experience with insurance billing and would be happy to take a look at your plan and answer any of your questions about coverage.

How many treatments will I need?

The number of treatments needed varies by condition. Acute problems may be resolved in as little as three treatments, while chronic conditions may take ten or more treatments. Acupuncture is most effective when treatments are close together, especially in the beginning. Weekly treatment is recommended for most conditions, with more severe conditions requiring treatment twice per week. Most hormonal conditions take at least three consecutive months of weekly treatment. After the initial course of treatment, many patients will choose to move into maintenance phase, coming in less frequently or as needed.
